Instructions | Specimen Type: Red-top tube, gel-barrier tube, lavender-top (EDTA) tube, OR green-top (heparin) tube Specimen Storage: FREEZE. Specimen Collection: Transfer serum or plasma to a plastic transport tube before freezing. To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, PLEASE SUBMIT SEPARATE FROZEN SPECIMENS FOR EACH TEST REQUESTED. Specimen Stability: Ambient: 1 day, Refrigerated : 3 days, Frozen: 7 days Patient Preparation: Patient should be fasting; however, a two-hour postprandial level has been used in order to evaluate hepatic function after the gallbladder has been completely emptied (ie, challenge the liver with a high level of bile acids in the portal circulation). For women with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy who need peak bile acid testing, samples may be taken postprandially. |
