SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS
Instructions Collection:
Collect sample in a clean wide-mouthed container, bedpan, plastic bag, or sheet of plastic wrap placed over the toilet seat. If infant or child has diarrhea, line the diaper with plastic wrap or use a pediatric urine bag placed over the rectum to collect a specimen that is not contaminated with urine.

Transfer specimen to Para-Pak C&S (Cary-Blair) container or FecalSwab transport container within 1 hour after stool is passed.
Methodology PCR FilmArray
The FilmArray Gastrointestinal (GI) Panel is an FDA approved Multiplex RT-PCR with melt analysis that detects multiple bacterial, viral and yeastnucleic acids.

Notes Transport:
Fresh/Raw Stool: Deliver to laboratory within 1 hour of collection.
Cary-Blair Container: Deliver to laboratory as soon as possible.
FecalSwab Container: Deliver to laboratory as soon as possible.

Stability/Storage:
Refrigerated - Up to 96 hours if submitted in Cary-Blair preservative container.
                       Up to 72 hours if submitted in FecalSwab
Room Temp - Up to 48 hours

Reject Due To:
Stool submitted in incorrect transport media
Specimen contaminated with urine, toilet paper, water or barium
Stools submitted in a diaper
Preserved specimens >96 hours old or fresh stool >1 hour old
