Instructions | Submit Nasopharyngeal Swab in Universal Transport Media (UTM-RT). Nasopharyngeal Swab - 1. To collect nasopharyngeal epithelial cells, all mucus from the nasal cavity is removed from nasal cavity prior to inserting nasopharyngeal swab. 2. Collect specimen using a sterile flocked nasopharyngeal swab. 3. Holding swab between thumb and forefinger of 1 hand and sheath in other hand, give the soft wire a 10 deg to 20 deg bend. This slight curve fits nose better, making the procedure more comfortable for the patient. 3. Gently rotate swab to obtain secretions and remove swab. Note: Swab should remain in place for 15 to 30 seconds for adequate sampling. 4. Remove cap and place swab into UTM. 5. Break the swab shaft by bending the swab at the scored breakpoint. Replace cap on UTM and secure lid tight. 6. Label tube with patient name (first and last) or other unique identifier, patient hospital identification number or Social Security number, date and time of collection, collector initials, and test(s) being ordered. 7. Transport UTM containing swab specimen refrigerated to laboratory. Room temperature transport is acceptable for swab specimens received in the laboratory within 30 minutes from time of collection. Note: Specimen source is required on request form for processing. |
